If something I do results in someone's death, I am, of course, responsible for that death. But am I similarly responsible if someone's death results from my failure to act? For example, if I go and shoot someone, their death is my fault. But if I refuse to give money to a starving person and that person dies as a result of not having money to buy food, is their death my fault? If I had never lived, the starving person would have died anyway, whereas the person whom I shoot would not have died had it not been for me. So, doing something makes me more responsible for the consequences than when I fail to act.
