At Everthorpe Prison in Yorkshire, prisoners made no attempt to escape using ladders placed against the outside walls by drug dealers and prostitutes plying their trades. A prison officer spokesperson said that this was because the authorities had made prisons too comfortable and thus failed to deter criminals. A large number of released prisoners quickly re-offended and returned to prison where they had all the comforts of home: a television in each cell, breakfast in bed, a wage and cash bonuses for good behaviour.
