Hospital mortality rates have declined significantly since the introduction of electronic health records (EHR) systems. Hospitals that implemented EHR systems in 2015 saw mortality rates decrease by an average of 15% by 2018, whilst hospitals without such systems saw only minimal improvement. Electronic records allow doctors immediate access to patient histories, test results, and medication lists, reducing dangerous errors. The technology has clearly been a major success in improving patient safety. However, implementing EHR systems is expensive, and some hospital administrators have questioned whether the investment is justified. These concerns are misplaced: the evidence demonstrates that electronic health records save lives, and all hospitals should be required to adopt them regardless of cost.
