Secant, Cosecant, and Cotangent
Understanding the reciprocal trigonometric functions and their graphs
SPEC 5.4 • TRIGONOMETRY
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson
Understand the definitions of , , and
Know the relationships between reciprocal and primary trig functions
Evaluate exact values of reciprocal functions at key angles
Sketch graphs of , , and
Identify domains, ranges, and asymptotes of reciprocal functions
Prior Knowledge
Graphs of , , and ; exact trigonometric values; understanding of asymptotes.
The Three Reciprocal Functions
Just as division is the inverse operation of multiplication, each primary trigonometric function has a reciprocal function.
The Reciprocal Functions
Secant
reciprocal of cos
Cosecant
reciprocal of sin
Cotangent
reciprocal of tan
Notation Note
Cosecant may be written as or . Both are acceptable.
Secant: Definition and Graph
Definition
$$\sec\theta = \frac{1}{\cos\theta}$$

SECant → Cosine (3rd letter of "sec" is C). Asymptotes where .
Cosecant: Definition and Graph
Definition
$$\csc\theta = \frac{1}{\sin\theta}$$
Period
Domain
Range or
Memory Aid
COsecant → Sine (the "co-" pairs with sine). Asymptotes where .
Cotangent: Definition and Graph
Definition
$$\cot\theta = \frac{1}{\tan\theta} = \frac{\cos\theta}{\sin\theta}$$
Period
Domain
Range (all reals)
Key Feature
Unlike sec and csc, cotangent is a decreasing function within each period. Crosses the x-axis at .
Critical Distinction
Common Mistake
Reciprocal ≠ Inverse
RECIPROCAL
"One divided by cos θ"
Output is a number
INVERSE
"The angle whose cosine is x"
Output is an angle
Remember
— these are completely different!
