Trigonometric Identities
The ratio identity and Pythagorean identities
SPEC 5.6 • TRIGONOMETRIC IDENTITIES
What is an Identity?
Definition
An identity is an equation that is true for all values of the variable (within its domain).
We use the symbol ≡ (triple equals) to show an identity, rather than = (single equals).
Identity
True for ALL values of x
Equation
True only when x = 2
Note
In trigonometry, θ (theta) represents any angle. We could equally use x, α (alpha), β (beta), or any other letter. The identities work for all angle values.
The Ratio Identity
From the definitions of sine, cosine, and tangent:
Ratio Identity
Restriction
This identity is valid only where , i.e., or
Remember
This identity is essential for simplifying expressions and converting between trig functions.
The Fundamental Pythagorean Identity
Consider a point P on the unit circle (radius = 1) at angle θ:
The coordinates of P are . Since P lies on the unit circle:

Memory Tip
Notice the pattern: each identity pairs a squared trig function with its corresponding reciprocal squared. The "co" functions (cot, csc) go together, and the non-"co" functions (tan, sec) go together.

Lesson Summary
Key Identities to Remember
Simplifying Strategy
Convert everything to sin and cos if unsure
Look for to replace with 1
Look for or to replace with 1
Use algebraic techniques like factoring (difference of squares)
Remember
The angle can be θ, x, α, β, A, or any other variable — the identities work the same way for all angles!
