Finding gradients when curves are defined by parametric equations
What Are Parametric Equations?
Definition
Parametric equations express and separately in terms of a third variable called the parameter, usually or .
Instead of writing directly in terms of , we write:
— the x-coordinate as a function of
— the y-coordinate as a function of
Example
The parametric equations , define a parabola.
When : point . When : point . When : point .
Key Concept
Each value of gives a unique point on the curve. The parameter links the coordinates together.
The Parametric Differentiation Formula
Key Formula
Or equivalently:
This formula comes from the chain rule:
Method
Differentiate and separately with respect to , then divide by .
Important
Make sure you divide the right way round! It's , not .
Method Steps
1
Differentiate with respect to to get

4
Substitute the parameter value if finding the gradient at a specific point
Watch Out
must not equal zero when dividing — this would make the gradient undefined (vertical tangent).

Method
Find parameter values where the numerator () or denominator () equals zero.
Special Case
If both and at the same value of , further analysis is needed (use L'Hopital's rule or limits).
