SPEC 7.4 • DIFFERENTIATION
The Chain Rule & Reciprocal Trig Functions
Differentiating composite functions and sec x, cosec x, cot x
Composite Functions
A composite function is a "function inside a function" — written as .
Examples
— sine of (trig of polynomial)
— exponential of (exp of linear)
— power of a linear function
— ln of cosine (log of trig)
Key Idea
We can't differentiate these using basic rules alone. We need the Chain Rule to handle the "inner" function.
The Chain Rule
The Chain Rule
If and , then differentiate with respect to , then multiply by the derivative of .
Memory Trick
"Differentiate the OUTER function, then multiply by the derivative of the INNER function."
Alternative Notation
If , then:

Reciprocal Trig Functions
These are the reciprocals of sine, cosine, and tangent:
Definitions
(reciprocal of cosine)
(reciprocal of sine)
(reciprocal of tangent)
Memory Aid
The third letter tells you the reciprocal: sec → 1/cos, cosec → 1/sin, cot → 1/tan
