Geometric Sequences
Definition
A geometric sequence is a sequence where each term is obtained by multiplying the previous term by a constant value. This constant is called the common ratio, denoted by .
Common Ratio
nth Term Formula
Key
= first term, = common ratio, = term number

Geometric Series
Definition
A geometric series is the sum of the terms of a geometric sequence. We use to denote the sum of the first terms.
Sequence
2, 6, 18, 54, 162
The individual terms
Series
2 + 6 + 18 + 54 + 162 = 242
The sum of the terms

Convergence & Sum to Infinity
Convergence Condition
A geometric series converges (has a finite sum to infinity) if and only if .
When , as , .
Convergent (|r| < 1)
Example:
Terms: 8, 4, 2, 1, 0.5, ...
Terms approach 0
Divergent (|r| ≥ 1)
Example:
Terms: 3, 6, 12, 24, ...
Terms grow forever
Sum to Infinity (|r| < 1 only)
